Think the speakeasy trend is played out? Well, maybe that’s just what a real speakeasy wants you to think. Enter Volstead’s Emporium at Lyndale and Lake in the Uptown neighborhood. It opened with neither press release nor front door. You have to work a little to find the hidden entrance in the rear parking lot, but it’s worth it. Descend into the basement bar, and you’ll find vintage lighting, curtained booths, a stage for live music, two-way mirrors, and hidden rooms where you can dine on simple plates of risotto, steak frites, and toasted canapés. Belly up to the small bar, order beautifully crafted Prohibition-era cocktails like the Sherry Cobbler, and then toast to this hidden gem of a bar. It’s only open Thursday through Monday when the red light is on.
