1. Beakers, 2. Sweet Science Ice Cream, 3. Frozbroz
There’s no doubt that ice cream is a classic American food, but that doesn’t mean we can’t give it an upgrade now and then. Check out three local scoopers that are taking it to the next level.
1. Lurking on the local food scene for a while, Ben Solberg and Erik Powers have been raffling off free pints of their intense and unique scratch-made ice cream on Facebook while working toward commercial production. By August 1, you should be able to buy FrozBroz’ magically flavored pints from their new kitchen or online. Start easy with rhubarb with brandy orange caramel made from stalks on their family farm, or go innovative like with past flavors asparagus with truffle honey or brown ale with bacon marmalade. Who knows what these pumped palate flavor masters will come up with next?

2. Hally Turner and Micah Pace worked on a base in Antarctica where staff scientists (affectionately known as Beakers by the non-scientists) would make ice cream with liquid nitrogen for fun. It was so easy, and so brilliant, they decided to give it a go themselves. Beakers is made with liquid nitrogen in a foggy, make-you-feel-like-a-smart-guy instant. Buttermilk lemon sherbet is stunningly silky, and the coffee flavor is intense and amazingly creamy considering it’s vegan as well as dairy- and gluten-free: no eggs, no cow’s milk, just coconut milk and showmanship.

3. Ashlee Olds knows that nature and science need not be at odds. It actually takes quite of bit of science and technique to produce exhilarating ice cream without using chemicals and preservatives. Using only organic grass-fed cow’s milk, organic sugar, and other local ingredients, Sweet Science ice cream isn’t over-processed, but it is fresh and sophisticated. Flavors such as salted caramel, olive oil, and pear riesling sorbet make you feel fancy, while the simple and refreshing berry crumble and root beer float let you indulge your inner I-Screamer. Pints are now available at the Verdant Tea shop.
