Since Sam and I were in Colorado when we got engaged, it was important to me that we celebrate with friends and family upon our return. So when my sister and maid-of-honor, Reade, suggested throwing us an engagement party, I was so on board.
We wanted something casual and fun, and since it was the beginning of summer, a pool party seemed like the perfect option. My in-laws were so gracious to host, and Reade and my sister-in-law, Rachel, spent the weeks leading up to the party working together to plan the details.

We were having trouble thinking of anything more creative than BBQ food when my mother-in-law, Brenda, suggested a Mexican food caterer. We got engaged on Cinco de Mayo, so what better way to celebrate than with tacos and margaritas? It was perfect—and also helped us set our theme for the evening: engagement fiesta.
The decorations were simple, but incredibly meaningful. Rachel painted large “S” and “T” canvas letters and strung a line of colorful tissue paper to bring our wedding colors—navy and orange—to life, while Reade made an awesome Pinterest-inspired “love story” board, with all the important dates throughout Sam’s and my six-year relationship. In keeping with the fiesta theme, we had sombreros and fake mustaches for the guests, and Rachel made adorable bride and groom headwear—mine even had a mini-veil! These two are clearly going to make amazing bridesmaids.
With nearly everything taken care of by our families, the only thing I had to worry about was figuring out what to wear. I have a beautiful dress in our wedding colors, but after shopping around three or four different malls and dozens of stores, I landed on a cute and casual dress from Macy’s that made me feel bridal. I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to wear white.
Since many of our relatives are out of town in New York, Chicago, Denver, and Iowa, we kept the guest list small—just our parents, siblings, and very close friends—and it was perfectly intimate. The sun was shining, the food and drinks were delicious, and Sam and I had so much fun watching some of the most important people in our lives come together to celebrate with us. We couldn’t have asked for a better kickoff to the wedding planning and festivities.
