Before being in a serious relationship with Nate, I had thought it wasn’t apropos to discuss the engagement ring. I thought it was something that the guy should magically pick out, the girl is taken aback by its perfection, and they both live happily ever after.
What I realized is that it’s a pretty normal conversation to have when you’re at that point in a relationship. Even though he asked me what kind of engagement ring I wanted, I still didn’t want to be too picky or materialistic, so I gave him some very general guidelines. But, because it’s quite a permanent fixture, he wanted some visual references.
One day when we were out shopping on Ford Parkway, he pulled me into R.F. Moeller Jeweler. We weren’t in there more than five minutes, but it was plenty of time to get my ring size and show him the stone, band, and setting styles I liked. Then, I told him that if he had any more questions, my sister or friends could help him out (I didn’t want to be too involved in the decision, after all).
The day he got down on one knee, opened the R.F. Moeller ring box, and asked me to marry him, the last thing I was thinking about was the ring style he had picked. But, when the fireworks cleared (figurative ones, that is), I looked at the ring and it was perfect! I will happily wear it until my dying day, and it will always serve as a reminder of how much I love Nate and how much he will always mean to me.
