When it came to choosing the bridal party, Sean had things easy. He has three brothers, and I have one. Deciding to have four guys by his side was an obvious choice. Picking my bridesmaids was a more difficult task. Neither Sean nor I have sisters, but I have lots of close female friends. Many of them would have made fantastic bridesmaids, but I ended up choosing these four. Here’s why:
Nicole and I met in college, and we ended up being roommates for nearly eight years. We navigated almost all of our 20s as a duo. Nicole knows my tastes and can anticipate my needs better than just about anyone. She’s a fabulous hostess. Plus, she asked me to be her maid of honor when she got married. It was a no-brainer to ask her to do the same.
Julie and I met in high school and have been close friends ever since. I’ve traveled with her more than anyone, and we’re always on the same page when it comes to planning new adventures. She’s full of energy and always livens up a room. I know that she’ll be the first person on, and off, the dance floor.
Melissa I also met in high school. Although we’ve lived in different states for years, we’re always able to pick up right where we left off when we see one another. She’s a wonderful source of calm and reassurance for me. She has an amazing ability to go with the flow, which I’ll definitely need on my big day!
I met Emily when I moved into my freshman dorm, and she took me to my first college party. Besides being the life of the party, she’s a bit of a wedding expert. Emily has been a bridesmaid several times. She knows when to jump in and get stuff done. If something goes wrong on my wedding day, I know that Emily will have no problem handling it on my behalf.
Being a bridesmaid is a big commitment, especially when it comes to time and money. I wanted to give my friends the option to think about it before giving me an answer. Instead of asking them in person, I decided to ask them in writing. I wanted it to feel more special than a text or an email, so I sent each one of them a package in the mail. (I’m thrilled to get any mail that’s not a bill or a credit card offer, and I figured they would feel the same way.)
For each bridesmaid, I wrote a letter explaining why I valued our friendship and wanted her with me on my wedding day. For fun, I also included some small gifts such as cute macaron boxes, nail polish, and lip balm.
The verdict? They all said “yes.” Together, these four friends make up my ideal bridal party.
