Wedding planning is definitely beginning to pick up the pace. Timelines, details, budgets, and major decisions are in my head every day and sometimes almost all day long. Nate and I are both BEYOND excited for our honeymoon, and I am so grateful to have a trip to look forward to! It sure helps make surviving wedding stress a whole lot easier. AHHH, I can't wait for it to be here!!! It will be so exciting to close one chapter of our life, and start a brand new one together . . . IN THAILAND!
I still sometimes can't believe we are going on such an outrageous adventure for our honeymoon. When we first started to talk location options, St. Lucia or somewhere in the Caribbean was our main focus. St. Lucia looks breathtakingly beautiful. It is known as the 'Jewel of the Caribbean'. The island itself has a mountainous terrain, lush rainforests, and exotic wildlife all in one. An all-inclusive stay at Sandals was where we were headed.
Here is where our story takes a slightly embarrassing, yet fabulous turn. Tanya and I were watching The Bachelorette episode where Ashley (and her crazy group of very hairy men) travel together to Thailand. The scenery blew me away. I spent the rest of the night Googling a new tropical getaway. Thanks to a very supportive, adventurous, and open-minded fiance we were booking our beach adventure full steam forward before we knew it.
For those of you who aren't overly familiar with either A. The Bachelorette , or B. Thailand, it is one of the most tropical, beautiful, and exotic countries out there. It's known for its fabulous beaches, scuba diving, jungle adventures, and of course killer cuisine. I was quickly overwhelmed by Google and all the wonderful things I was discovering.
We decided the only way to plan such a trip was through a travel agent. Our first recommendation was a major letdown. Nate and I have never used a travel agency before, and didn't really know what to expect. (We have always been hesitant to use an agency because of price. However, we soon discovered that they are mostly a complementary service that gets paid through the companies they use, or depending on the amount of research and time the put in a very minimal fee!) My first conversation with our agent (who works for a Leader in the industry), held many promises to a perfect honeymoon. Four voicemails later left on my behalf without return calls, and we were ready to turn back to Orbitz.
Thank God my 'Keeper of the Dress', Jody, saved the day with a recommendation to Skads Travel (in St. Louis Park). Kathy the owner and Susan our Travel Extraordinaire were absolutely the BEST. We gave them a somewhat tight budget, and in return they presented us with an amazing-fabulous-dreamy-incredible (as of now there aren't enough verbs to describe) perfect 13-night honeymoon in Thailand. Of course, I had a million questions in the planning process and wanted to make sure that our adventure was exactly what we were hoping for. After countless e-mails, Susan had planned the perfect exotic getaway.
We're spending four nights in Bangkok, five nights in Phuket, and really going out with a bang and spending five nights on Phi Phi Island. Our first four days are filled with planned adventures and excursions. From there things start to relax a bit. I can't wait to see the elephants, shop the floating market, eat at the restaurant in the ocean, explore the gem shops, splash in the water, snorkel on the island, and drink all the giant Mai Thai's I want with my Natey by my side!
For us, it truly is the best of both. A beach vacation and an amazing adventure that we will never forget!! Now if only I could get Nate to remember the sunscreen . . . :)
