Every wedding should have a theme. It sets the tone and gives direction for the entire chain of events. It's much easier to choose decorations, colors, patterns, and embellishments with a theme in mind. In Minnesota, a winter wedding can go many different directions. For our wedding, I knew I wanted a theme that was far, far away from Christmas colors or Valentine's hearts. After much thoughtful contemplation and deep discussion, I finally decided on our theme as sparkle-feather-glitter-icy-wintery-glamorous-winter berry. Talk about timeless!
I decided to take Coco Chanel's advice when it came time to start making decor decisions, "A girl (or in our case a wedding) should be two things . . . classy and fabulous!" Emphasis on the fabulous.
Since our wedding is a whole weekend of events, I really want to carry the theme though each activity. Our rehearsal dinner/welcome party at Pinstripes is the perfect place to kick-start our wintery wonderland event. My wedding planner from Simply Loves Wedding & Design, Shauna Brick, will sneak in to the venue a few hours early and transform an upscale bowling alley into an icy escape. The beauty of a February wedding is all of the great silver sparkle icicle decorations left from the holidays will be an easy find. Pinstripes sits on the edge of Centennial Lake, and guests can enjoy the ice skating view below as they gather around the outdoor fire pits adjacent to the building.
Shauna will then be able to use all of her fabulous sparkle decorations from Pinstripes, and transport them over to the Arboretum for our ceremony the next day. The Snyder auditorium is a cozy and intimate venue that is just the right size to create our dimly lit ceremony. The backdrop for our ceremony will be lighted vases, sparkle branches, and silver candelabra's from my grandmother. Ideally, I'd love to have my entire aisle candlelit as well . . . it's definitely worth shortening the train on my dress. I would hate to be the bride that went down in fire!
Our ceremony at Oak Ridge will be the best and last all out sparkle hooray. Oak Ridge is partnered up with Festivities in Medina. Part of our almost all-inclusive package was centerpieces and decorations, which we get to choose. One of my most favorite parts of wedding planning, thus far, was our trip to meet with Heather at Festivities and finalize the decoration details. Walking into their building was, for a girl who loves sparkle, like a small slice of decoration heaven. Big crystal chandeliers and photos of Audrey Hepburn filled the room.
Heather has sample tables set up with sparkle napkin rings and beautiful bow seat covers. It's easy to see how quickly decoration expenses can add-up. From the beginning, Heather was right on board with my over-the-top theme. She has created the perfect table centerpieces to really capture the 'emphasis on fabulous' feeling I was trying to achieve.
After seeing her centerpiece magic work, I knew I definitely wanted her help with flowers. Flowers are important to me, but not worth investing hundreds and hundreds of dollars that we could spend better elsewhere. I wanted to create a really unique bouquet for the girls incorporating our colors of gray and winter berry cranberry. My vision was for them to have a bouquet filled with cranberry flowers packed tightly together and framed with a gray ostrich feather collar. The boutonnieres for the men will be a small bunch of winter berries also framed with an ostrich feather. Nate's major concern was how his friends would look in feathers. Thanks to Heather and all of her examples, we were able to show him just how cool they will be!
Much to my excitement, and Nate's dismay, my sister (and maid-of-honor) Annie and I were able to attend Festivities design event just this last week. Many of their partner vendors attended. This included amazing custom cakes by Penny Steele and insanely detailed dresses by Joynoelle. Heather and her crew definitely decorated to impress. Brides and their entourages were able to wander the venue and sample gourmet popcorn stations, chocolate fountains, cereal bars, signature cocktails, design their own bouquets, and get inspired by all of Festivities detailed decor.
And just when Nate thought I was done with our decorations . . . Sparkle curtain here we come!!!
