Many girls spend years dreaming of their perfect wedding dress. From an early age, our dreams of white extravagance begin, and from there they only escalate. I wish I could say I had my picture perfect dress in mind from day one. However, my love (okay . . . obsession) with jewels, had me much more concerned with the ring! When it came time to start thinking about choosing a dress my mind went a million different directions. At first I loved the idea of a dress like my friend Heather.
Something with lace, feminine, and with perhaps a little Pippa Middleton from behind. My sister Annie and I went with a picture of a fabulously lace dress in hand from The Knot to The Wedding Shoppe. We were girls on a secret mission (without the Mom's) to try on just one dress. Hanging on the rack it looked perfect. Sculpted collar, crystal flowers, keyhole back, it was absolutely gorgeous. I primped my hair, threw on a little lipstick, and slipped into the dress. Annie was anxiously waiting, and after my first glance in the mirror a giggle fit ensued. I looked like a pioneer woman straight from the 1800's. The dress, on me, was a train wreck.
My vision quickly changed to something more modern, and perhaps mermaid inspired. I do way too many lunges and squats at the gym not to show off a little bit of my hard work, right? Besides, I knew Nate would love a dress with a little bit of 'pop!' from all angles. My Mom and I made a trip to Brides of France together, and poured over racks filled with art. Some of their dresses were so detailed and well-crafted, that the dresses almost seemed beyond wearable. I found a couple really special dresses, and began my model show for my Mom. Brides of France has some of the best bridal accessories in town. It has so many cool, true vintage pieces to really help make your look unique and special. From tiny little feathered short veils, to modern and vintage fur stoles, and, of course, all the rhinestones a girl can handle. It's impossible not to find some special accessory here. Mid model moment, the accessorizing, errr over-accessorizing began. When you're surrounded by furs, feathers, and jewels it's tough not to get over-zealous! As I was reaching and stretching to grab another crystal belt to try on, I realized that moving in my mermaid ensemble was a total challenge. As much as I loved the dress, and the thought of Nate's jaw dropping seeing me in it, I knew that I wanted something I could move and shake and perhaps even throw out a high-kick if I felt so inspired.
When it came time to rally the troops (both Moms, Annie, and Heather) for the real deal, I had no idea what I was going to walk away with. My parents made a special trip up for dress shopping, so I knew that we were girls on a mission. Our first stop of the day was Bridal Accent Couture in Savage.
Several of my friends and clients had raved about the dresses they had found, and the outstanding service. I was a bit concerned with 'Couture' and how their dresses would fit within my dress budget. I decided to call ahead and the owner Michelle assured me she would have many options to try on. My posse and I were greeted with the warmest of welcome's, and immediately felt right at home. Her shop feels like a trip to the spa, with plush furnishings, soft lighting, a warm and inviting environment . . . and of course, dresses galore hanging everywhere! I love that nothing is plastic wrapped or tucked out-of-sight. I explained to her that I originally was thinking something slightly simple, since the rest of my wedding may be just a bit over-the-top. Also, since it's a winter wedding I wanted a dress that I could find a little jacket or a fur wrap to wear with. After my mermaid experience, I definitely wanted something I could shake shake shake in as well. My group settled in for the model show, and two dresses in I knew that we had found 'The One'. Okay, so perhaps it wasn't really simple at all . . . but deep down did I really think I would choose something without at least a little bit of sparkle?! Michelle helped button me up, and we stepped out to show the crew. From the sparkle in their eyes, and the sparkle on my dress, I knew this was it! Dream dress success!
