Nate and I have been engaged since January, and wow what an adventure it has been! After he proposed, (check out my profile for all the juicy details), I did what any new bride would do: Rush to Target and buy as many Martha Stewart wedding magazines as possible! The ideas just started to pile-up, and before we knew it wedding planning was in full swing. I feel blessed to say I am going to marry one of the most loving, genuine, and handsome men I have ever met. Together (with help from our two families that we absolutely love and adore), we've managed to make sorting through all the details of such a major event fun, festive, and not too stressful.
In Minnesota, a 'Winter Wedding' is way more than just a little outside of the box. (Especially those that are not Valentine's themed.) When spreading the word of our plans, the most common response is, "You must be doing a destination wedding someplace warm!" Little do all of those skeptics out there know how fabulous a snowy Minnesota wedding can really be! Sure, chances are we'll have to stress about the possibility of another 22" of snow until the actual date . . . and, of course, the possibility of Nate and I eating dinner alone for 170, but that's what makes life an adventure!
For us, a winter wedding just felt right. Personally, I couldn't imagine walking down the aisle with a hot summer sun beaming in. Or starting our dance in what looks to be the middle of the afternoon. I think that lighting sets the entire mood for an event. With the winter sun setting early, a candlelight ceremony will be incredibly romantic and exactly what we envisioned. The lighted draping for the reception will not only be a glamorous decoration, but also purpose-serving. Fire pits framed in the big glass windows of our reception site will create the perfect Minnesota winter backdrop.
In the process of planning, we've also learned there are huge financial benefits to a winter wedding. For example, we get one of the top, most experienced DJ's since availability isn't a problem. Our food and beverage minimum is much lower in the 'off-season' then it would be during summer months. And although Nate doesn't necessarily see this as a plus . . . I'll be able to buy clearance holiday glitter decorations, faux fur, and sparkling New Year's champagne flutes at massive savings! :)
Most importantly, we are excited to show all of our out-of-state family and friends just how beautiful MinneSNOWta can be! For many, it will be their first time here exploring the city, and we can't wait to share our beautiful white, twinkling, icy home with them!
