When it comes to wedding attire, selecting your bridal gown is a top priority. But bridesmaid dresses are a close second. With so many styles and colors to choose from, the decision can be daunting. I found that picking a color palette inspired me.
Our wedding is in June. The start of summer reminds me of my favorite flower—lilacs. My parents have lilac bushes in their front yard, and I look forward to them blooming every year. I love the sweet smell and purple blooms. Lilacs were the inspiration for my wedding color palette of lavender, dark purple, and gray.
Once I selected wedding colors, the dress style came next. I’m having a formal evening wedding, so I preferred long dresses instead of short ones. I wanted the dresses to be similar enough that they looked good together, but different enough that my bridesmaids could customize them. I turned to Pinterest for inspiration and fell in love with the Annabelle dress by Jenny Yoo. I had to see it in person.
I did some research on Jenny Yoo’s website and discovered that Flutter in Minneapolis carries her dresses. I heard great things about the boutique from other brides, so I didn’t hesitate to make an appointment.
I went to Flutter with my two in-state bridesmaids—Nicole and Julie—plus my mom. Our stylist, Karli, greeted us and encouraged us to look around the shop. Flutter had an amazing selection of bridesmaid dresses, and we carefully looked through them. But we kept going back to the Jenny Yoo gown. Karli led us to a private dressing room where my maids tried the dress on. It was great to see the color options and how the tulle fabric moved. Karli also showed us the different ways to convert the top of the dress, which we loved. We agreed this dress was the one.
When the appointment was over, I sent the dress information to my out-of-state bridesmaids, Melissa and Emily. I didn’t want to make a decision without consulting them first! Luckily, they both approved of the dress.
My bridesmaids have different hair colors and skin tones, so we picked two dress colors to compliment them. Julie and Emily will wear lilac, and Nicole and Melissa will wear amethyst. I know they’ll look gorgeous on June 18.
Tip: If you’re shopping for bridesmaids dresses, ask for fabric swatches. Boutiques don’t always carry every color a dress comes in, so swatches are the best way to see what a color will look like in person. Once you pick a dress/color, ask for some swatches to take home with you. They’re really helpful when you’re selecting flowers, table linens, and other décor.
