Brides (myself included) often get so wrapped up in the ceremony and reception details that they forget about another very big part of planning a wedding: planning a honeymoon.
Since my groom, Sam, has let me lead the way on items like the flowers and stationery, we decided he would be in charge of booking us an amazing, romantic post-nuptials escape.
We knew for certain that we wanted to take our honeymoon right away—as opposed to waiting a few months after the wedding—to really soak up that newlywed glow (and recover from an adrenaline-pumping weekend of wedding activities). We did not, however, know where in the world to go. Being that our wedding is at the end of October (and we live in Minnesota), sun and sand were top priorities. After doing some research, we narrowed our focus to the Caribbean, Mexico, and Hawaii.
We quickly discounted any of the Caribbean islands when we realized the high potential for hurricanes in the fall. Since we were hoping for something all-inclusive, Mexico seemed like the obvious choice (we even got to the point of choosing a city and resort), but when the media frenzy surrounding the Zika virus intensified, we reconsidered—and I’m so glad we did! Hawaii had always been a first choice in our minds, but we weren’t sure if it was affordable on our budget. That is, until we realized our Costco membership would come in handy for more than just buying in bulk. Did anyone else know that Costco has a travel division?!
Sam, being a CPA, did a great job plopping all of our island and resort options into a spreadsheet and crunching the numbers. After choosing the Big Island for its ecological diversity and abundance of activities (plus at the recommendation of co-workers and friends), we had our honeymoon planned, booked, and paid for (including airfare and car rental, which Costco can automatically build into your package) within an hour. I can’t wait to spend 10 days with my new husband(!) at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa!
Now we just have to plan the itinerary. Luaus, deep-sea fishing, volcano exploration, and plenty of beach time are all musts, but if you have any additional suggestions, please let me know!
