Emily and Alex grew up a mile away from each other in Edina—Alex was in the same class as Emily’s older sister at Edina High School, and her dad coached his mock trial team. But it took OkCupid for the two to meet in December 2012. “We joked on our first date that this was like old-fashioned courting, despite the Internet,” says Alex, “because I’d met her family and been to her house before we went on a date, but separated by a good 15 years or so.”
The two hit it off right away, and their bond strengthened during trips to far-flung places—and not the easiest places to travel either (think India, Thailand, Cambodia). “If you can go through that and have fun, that’s romance,” says Emily.
It was while traveling in November 2014 that the pair got engaged in Paris, where Emily studied abroad during college. Alex surprised her in front of the Louvre, and both of their families flew in to join them post-proposal.
As soon as the couple returned home, they dove into wedding planning to beat the rush of Christmastime engagements. “We thought a lot of people were probably going to get engaged over Christmas, so we saw 12 event spaces in as many days,” says Alex.
One of those event spaces was Orchestra Hall, which immediately felt right for their vision of understated modern elegance. It was on the second-floor mezzanine with skyline views that the couple exchanged vows on a hot August day, before heading downstairs for cocktail hour and dinner in the Orchestra Hall atrium. The bride’s Tara LaTour ankle-length dress fit the modern-elegant feel, with a little extra shimmer for good measure. “If I could bedazzle everything and put sparkles on everything, I would. But I understand that would not be the adult thing to do,” laughs Emily.
There was some understated shimmer to the reception, with ample candles and glass complementing the modern, clean surroundings. The couple also wove in a few French touches—including dinner from Vincent A Restaurant and champagne the couple discovered in France—to remind them of that magical night in Paris.
