Chaos and commotion are just a couple of signs that say, “the big day has arrived." This is supposed to be the best day of our lives—the day we say those two magical words, "I Do," and live happily ever after.
Smart & Chic Beauty, a Minneapolis-based hair and makeup service that comes to the bride, helps make the big day precisely that: a hassle-free time to loosen up and look your best.
Here’s how it works: Founder Julie Swenson and her team of cosmetic artists meet with a bride for a trial run at least eight weeks before the wedding. A one- to two-hour practice session of sharing pictures and communication allows the bride and her makeup artists to get to know each other and ensures the best possible bridal look.
One popular service is the airbrush foundation, a subtle colored makeup base that holds up during the long wedding day—and looks and feels as though there’s nothing there. Other services include faux lashes, facials, manicures, lash extensions, and of course updos, blowouts, and makeup.
“Our team is talented and committed to ongoing education and keeping our finger on the pulse of the latest trends,” says hair and makeup artist Kira McCarty. Smart & Chic offers prices competitive with salon rates, plus the convenience of the bride staying put. Smart & Chic also provides wedding-day hair (starting at $30) and makeup services (starting at $15) to the bridal party and Mother of the Bride.
Swenson reports that several brides called after their big day to ask, “What was that makeup that made me look so good?” This prompted her to launch a Smart & Chic makeup line in 2008, including bridal and everyday lines.
A beauty industry veteran, Swenson says she wanted to make a business out of making people feel good. “I saw the power in the ability to change a person’s day,” she says. Now in four locations—Minneapolis, Los Angeles, New York, and Nashville—Smart & Chic is making weddings hassle-free for brides all over the country.
Stay tuned for the opening of a local Smart & Chic Beauty Boutique next month. Swenson says she plans to open the storefront near Panera and Surdyk's in Northeast Minneapolis. The boutique will offer bridal makeup lines, other beauty necessities, and fresh accessories such as Nelle Handbags.
To schedule a trial run in the months leading up to your big day, visit Smart & Chic’s Web site or call 612-871-4482. “In the end,” says Smart & Chic hair and makeup artist Amber Brenke, “it’s all about staying calm and being happy on your wedding day.”
