I‘ve seen 27 Dresses enough times to know that designers haven’t always been too kind to bridesmaids when it comes to their selection of dresses. But the good news is that today, bridesmaid dresses have shifted from super-structured duchess gowns to more modern styles that reflect the latest red carpet looks and fashion trends. The hottest trend taking the bridesmaid world by storm: Chiffon!
Whimsical and feminine, this lightweight fabric is one of the most popular choices for bridesmaids’ dresses, not to mention one of the most elegant. Whether you are looking for a sweetheart or halter neckline, tea- or floor-length—chiffon dresses offer a great deal of variety in any hemline, length, or color.
Carolyn Taylor, buyer and merchandiser at The Wedding Shoppe Inc., says, “Bridal parties are loving chiffon” because of the fabric’s ready-to-wear feel. The material is “quite comfortable,” says Taylor, and “a variety of sizes [are] flattering."
Owner of Flutter Boutique, Michelle Hanson, mentions that not only has chiffon "become more affordable," but is "easy for all different body shapes to wear. From size 2 to size 20 and even with a pregnant belly, chiffon drapes nicely over almost any shape, hides trouble areas, and allows bridesmaids to move freely" while partying throughout the night. Perhaps this is why Flutter has sold more chiffon dresses than any of its other styes.
The high quality fabric can be made from either silk or rayon, and, because of its delicate and sheer nature, gives gorgeous flow to any style of dress. Its versatility also makes it perfect for any type of wedding—from a more elegant affair to a casual outdoor wedding.
