The Ring: I’m all about a timeless look, and he knew a round diamond solitaire with a thin band was exactly what I wanted. With one of my best friends in tow, he was able to narrow his pick down to the perfect one. Needless to say, I love it!
Neither of us were looking for love on the night we met back in 2012. If we had been, we probably would have picked a better location than a bar downtown! Both out for the night with our individual groups of friends, we happened to be standing next to each other and struck up a conversation. We had our first date five days later at Stella’s, followed closely by a second a few days later. Despite Blaine moving into a house with three other single guys only a few weeks after we met, we continued to spend time together—and I eventually became the unofficial fifth roommate! We got a place of our own about a year later, and after almost four years together, he popped the question.
So many people can feel an engagement coming—but not me! We had discussed the topic of marriage frequently over the last couple of years, and I always knew we were on the same page for what we wanted our future to look like. The answer of “when,” however, was always a mystery to me.
That January 23, I was racing around doing some last-minute shopping and other errands before our trip to Mexico the next morning. His sister had called us a few days prior to see if we wanted to go ice skating with their family that night at Centennial Lakes Park, and I had a lot to get done before we left. I was ready to go at the time we agreed on, but he strolled in late (on purpose) and I spent our whole ride over to Edina being grouchy with him, as I knew his niece had an early bedtime and they wouldn’t be staying to skate much longer.
When we finally got there, Blaine insisted on taking the path around the rink to see if we could find them first. I found this idea to be so frustrating, as we were already late and running short on time to spend with them. Just as I was really getting irritated, he stopped me in the middle of the pathway and told me his family wasn’t actually coming. Total confusion set in, but at that moment he began getting down on one knee and my brain went into overdrive. I wish so much that I could remember what his next words were, but there were too many emotions, tears, and excitement to possibly remember!
Just as I thought my life couldn’t get any better, he suggested we walk over to Pinstripes to have a celebratory drink. As we walked in, the first person I laid eyes on was my mom (who lives nearly four hours away in Wisconsin), and from there the tears started flowing again! He had gathered both of our families and many of my friends to celebrate the occasion and it couldn’t have been more perfect. Blaine is many things, but a planner is not one of them, so the fact that he pulled all of this together for me was truly amazing. His timing couldn’t have been better either, as we were able to enjoy the next week relaxing and enjoying our engagement on our first big, “just the two of us” vacation.
