The Ring: Rose gold custom design from Anne Sportun. It’s still being created, so right now I am wearing my wedding band—a rose gold infinity number that I’m obsessed with.

About Us: Josh and I were both miraculously accepted to the University of Wisconsin-Madison back in 2001. Despite having a few mutual friends (not to mention our shared love for Badger football games, beer, brats, and general shenanigans), we never met in college. Post-Madtown, we both moved to Minneapolis. I was introduced to Josh numerous times by our pals—I just remember him being this kinda loud guy who had a big, curly mop of hair and loved motorcycles. Two years after we met, I attended a BBQ at his place and could not take my eyes off this hot guy who was manning the grill. Turned out, Josh had shaved his head the night before. Who knew there was such a stud under that ‘fro! He took me out for dinner a few days later (sushi at Fuji Ya, in case you’re wondering) and it was the best first date ever. Still, on date numero three, I had a minor freak out and broke things off. He was persistent and kept in touch over the next few months. I’m not exactly sure what happened, but a full five months after I’d ended things, I realized he was pretty darn special. We’ve been together ever since (five years this fall!) and weathered a lot—two years of long distance dating, ACL surgery, a remodel of a 110-year-old house, international travel (Germany and Tanzania), and adopting a rescue pup, Patsy (the cutest little pain in the butt you’ll ever meet). He’s my favorite person and I’m so darn excited to love him forever and ever.

Engagement Story: As I mentioned, Josh and I have been together for more than five years. We own a duplex together, we have a dog. The jig is up. We’ve been discussing the M word for more than a year and a half. I can be particular in my preferences, so Josh really wanted me involved in the ring selection. I’m going to wear it for the rest of my life, and we’re dropping some serious ca-ching on it, so I better love it, right? We worked with jewelry designer Anne Sportun to create something unique. Since I was already in on the ring stuff, Josh wanted the engagement to be a surprise. He’d coordinated with my coworker, Dusti, on proposing during one of our upcoming work trips to New York. I spent the entire weekend (Oct. 17-20) running around the city for the New York Food and Wine Festival. My boss, Andrew Zimmern, hosted the festival’s closing party on Sunday afternoon, which was fun, but exhausting. My work team returned to our hotel around 5:45 p.m. I’d been up since 6:30 that morning  and could not wait to lay down for a few minutes before dinner. Dusti suggested we instead grab a beer in the hotel bar. I wasn’t really up for it, but I’ll basically do anything Dusti asks me to. When we walked into the bar, it was empty . . . with the exception of Josh (in a suit!), down on one knee. My heart basically melted right then and there. My engagement ring wasn’t ready yet, so he gave me a plastic replica ring he’d made on a 3-D printer at work (gotta love engineers!). Dusti, Andrew, and his wife, Rishia, and a few other colleagues were waiting in the hotel’s beer garden with champagne. We all had an amazing dinner together at Lafayette (a killer French brasserie. If you’re heading to NYC, make a reservation now!). Then, Josh and I headed to the NoMad hotel, where he’d booked us for two extra nights. The next day, we bummed around the city, spent a few hours at a fancy spa in SoHo, and enjoyed another (super fancy) dinner at Café Boulud. It was the best.

The Big Day: We just got engaged and are planning on a June 28 wedding. Based on the bewildered reactions I get when I tell people that, I am assuming most couples spend a lot more time in the fiancé stage. Oh well! We have lots of friends and family members, so we’re planning on a big, BIG party, with lots of personal touches. I’m convinced our friends and family could have a blast with two-dozen pizzas, a keg of beer, and a boom box, which is the best foundation we could ask for! We can’t wait for our party.
