Edina Promenade along Centennial Lake
Ten-acre Centennial Lake is just one of the treats along the Edina Promenade.
Among the most affluent of Minneapolis’s suburbs, Edina is home to three golf courses, two country clubs, and several wonderful boutiques. The city is also known for its schools and shops: Edina High School is ranked seventh best in the state, and several high-end shopping and dining areas dot the city, including Southdale Center (the country's first indoor mall), Galleria, and 50th & France. “In many ways, our 16 square miles is almost a self-contained full-service city in a suburban setting,” says Scott Neal, Edina city manager.
Upon its 1888 incorporation, the Village of Edina was a post-Civil War crossroads of Scottish, Irish, and African American farming families, and speculation exists that the city had ties to the Underground Railroad. Edina’s racial demographics changed considerably upon the 1920s establishment of the whites-only Country Club residential district. Today, the city’s black population is growing again; it’s doubled since 2000.
You’ll find a variety of starter homes, townhomes, and condos, along with a range of sprawling estates, both historic and new construction. In March, the median list price per square foot was $187, compared to the $127 Twin Cities region average, putting a premium on Edina’s location. This area boasts some of the Twin Cities’ most luxurious homes.
