Not so many snowfalls ago, we were faced with a choice. Our winter jackets could be warm, or they could be stylish—not both. Remember when the streets (and skyways) were a sea of shapeless black puffers? Those days are over, thanks to textile advances that make it possible for material to be lightweight and warm.
And, thanks to fashion’s current infatuation with function (Hello, sneakers! Yes to chic sweatshirts!), this winter, the puffer takes on new shape, color, and purpose. Try layering one under a pretty wool coat, or swapping a sweater for shiny ski vest.
There’s no shortage of options, or resources. Upscale outerwear brand Arc’teryx recently opened its first Twin Cities store at Calhoun Square. L.L.Bean is now open at Mall of America. And that’s on top of the many other brand stores—Patagonia, The North Face, Columbia—as well as specialty stores such as Trail Mark, Sun & Slope, and Hoigaard's that continue to raise the bar on luxury outerwear.
If there’s one thing Minnesotans will splurge on, it’s a great coat. Or two.
This season’s boxy cuts lend themselves to layering.

You can’t go wrong in black and white. Tuck a puffer under your wool coat for extra warmth without sacrificing style.

You know the puffer is having a moment when designers are using leather—rather than nylon—to mimic the shape.

Proof that cozy can be cool. We’re ready for non-black coats, and loving updated versions of the classic ski sweater.

Breaking out of black can soften your winter essentials—almost as much as topping an everyday outfit with a statement coat.
