Juut Salonspas has purchased the former Intoto building at the corner of 31st and and Hennepin in Minneapolis with plans to turn it into a training salon under a new, albeit familiar, name: INTOTO Salon.
Juut is already a prominent presence in Uptown with a can't-miss-it salon just one block down, at the corner of Lake and Hennepin. Juut's Uptown salon has been operating as both a training center for new employees and a full price salon. Owner David Wagner acknowledged that it's confusing for the client. New Artist haircuts start at $25, while masters prices can top $100. So he decided to separate the training center from the salon, and rather than create new confusion with two Juuts within a block of each other, Wagner is starting a new brand under the Juut umbrella that pays homage to the clothing store that occupied the building for more than 20 years.
"It was an awesome, progressive clothing store for men and women," Wagner said in a Facebook post. "We went round and round on a new brand name for our new location that would embody what we do for training—not only for our new staff entering Juut, but for our customers at a value priced salon. We decided that the meaning of 'intoto' did just that…total, whole, and complete."
Wager says he got the blessing of the former Intoto clothing store owner, Karen Heithoff, "who thought it was just great that Intoto would have meaning for a whole new generation through the use of beauty."
Intoto, which pushed the fashion envelope in the Twin Cities, selling designer brands that hadn't previously been available in town, closed in 2010 after a 20-year run. Heithhoff was ready to retire. The high-profile two-level building, which is across the street from cb2 home store, was occupied for a couple of years by another independent boutique, but it has been vacant since Motto closed in 2014.
Wagner says INTOTO Salon will open in October. All new stylists will begin at INTOTO before moving on to a Juut Salonspa. Juut has seven Twin Cities salons, plus two in Arizona and one in northern California.
