Fashion moves so fast these days, you need wheels to keep up. Mobile pop ups have been crisscrossing the country for a while now—Warby Parker sold glasses out of a school bus before opening stores; Sota Clothing has driven brand awareness in a 1972 Fleetwing Chickadee “Caravan Store” that goes where the action is, like the Minnesota State Fair. Now, custom menswear brand J.Hilburn is along for the ride. The J.Hilburn Fit Tour (#JHFitTour) is parking its mobile studio in the Twin Cities Sept. 6-9 as part of a national road trip. For a brand based on building relationships—clothes are sold through personal stylists—it’s a great way to connect with a wider audience. J.Hilburn's sweet spot is customization at an off-the-rack price.
“Many guys don't realize they can get a made-to-measure suit for $750, plus they get to pick out all their own details, select separate fit options, not have to go to the store, and have a personal stylist helping them make all their selections,” says Sarah Ramsay, a senior executive partner with J.Hilburn, and the Twin Cities’ leading stylist. She makes a compelling case for custom: “Off-the-rack trousers are made assuming your seat is 6 inches longer than your waist, but that’s only true for about half of my clients. As a result, their pants are baggy in the seat and thighs or too tight.” When it comes to suits, Ramsay points out that a 44 jacket is typically sold with a 38 pant, but she finds most men in need of that jacket size are closer to a 34 to 36 pant.
“It’s become part of the process to get your suit altered to fit, so why not select what you want from the start?” Ramsay visits a lot of closets and says most men actually have more clothes than they need, but they utilize very little of their wardrobe. “I help my clients realize they only need about five or six suits and maybe 25 or 30 shirts. When it fits well, and coordinates, they’ll feel awesome and wear everything.”
The mobile studio will be stocked with J.Hilburn’s latest collection of shirts and suits. Stylists will be on hand to take measurements and make style recommendations for men who want to test the service. And, there will be cocktails, which are always on-trend.
The J.Hilburn Fit Tour will make several stops around town, including the W Minneapolis, CoV in Wayzata, and Room & Board in Minneapolis. Get the full schedule.
