Whether sailing across Lake Minnetonka, biking the Dakota Rail Trail, or preparing for a ski getaway, Wayzata residents revel in the outdoors—perhaps no one more so than longtime resident and retailer Jim McWethy. The co-owner of Skijammers ski school, he ran Sports Hut for more than three decades, until selling it six years ago. When the company left Wayzata (and subsequently folded), McWethy saw an opportunity to get back in the game—or, more aptly, games.
This time around, the focus is on apparel rather than equipment, and the setting is a Lake Street boutique. Sun & Ski Clothing Outfitters sells high-end performance apparel and accessories for the whole family. That includes proven brands such as Bogner, Helly Hansen, Spyder, Kjus, and, in a nod to the fashionistas at the pool, Trina Turk swimwear. This summer, the shop features a broad assortment of swimwear, beach totes, and flip- flops, as well as apparel for cycling, golf, and tennis. In the winter, you’ll find ski outfits and outdoor apparel.
“We want to take care of families and also the people traveling to Aspen,” says McWethy’s wife and store buyer, Robin McWethy. “People who live in this area have the time and the means to enjoy the outdoors. It’s becoming a niche down here.”
That’s apparent: Sun & Ski’s Lake Street neighbors include Maha! Inspired Activewear, Steele Fitness, and new cycling shop Epic Grind. There’s no excuse for not looking good on the go. 701 E. Lake St., Ste. 175, Wayzata, 952-873-7282, sunandskiwayzata.com
