What separates those who dress well from those who are truly, enviably stylish is personality, consistent statements, and a copious amount of sequins. Stephanie Shimp is one of those people with style all her own. You know as soon as you see her—it’s the skinny leopard-print belt that elevates a black cashmere turtleneck and jeans; the red scarf paired with a hot pink blouse; a chambray shirt worn over—what else?—a sequined top.
“I’m usually more dressed up than everyone else, and I’m okay with that,” says Shimp, who opened her first of seven Twin Cities restaurants, the Highland Grill, when she was just 22. “I went through a uniform stage in my 20s when all I did was work: khaki pants, jeans, white T-shirt, black T-shirt. My 30s became about having babies. Now I’ve come into my own place. I’m very happy, style-wise, and I don’t feel obligated to buy polka dots because everyone else is. I like my 40s. I wouldn’t go back.”
