Before she began teaching Twin Cities women to feel beautiful (Stand tall and stick your boobies out! They’re like shooting bullets!) at her popular Zumba and barre classes, Vanessa Dembo was a famous singer and celebrity television and radio host in Venezuela.
Born and raised in a country where looking young is a national pastime, she watched women, including her artist mother, get their hair and nails done every week. “Women are really pulled together in Venezuela,” says Dembo, 44. “They always want to smell good and look good no matter how much money they have.”
After meeting her husband on JDate and moving to his hometown of Edina, she learned that Minnesotans are not only lower-maintenance, but weekly trips to the salon here are cost-prohibitive. Although Dembo has learned to embrace her natural side, her Latin roots still influence her beauty regimen, both inside and out.
How She Does It
Blowouts: I wash my hair every other day and blow it out myself with a natural-bristle brush to help hold the volume and shine. If I need help I go to The Wow Bar in Edina.
Carbo Loathing: I prefer salmon and salads. I think it would feel worse if I ate pasta.
Everyday Makeup: Revision Intellishade SPF 45 Tinted Moisturizer and glo minerals Pressed Base powder foundation.
Fillers: I don’t think I’ll ever go to fillers. I want to look natural. I don’t want people to look at me and think I’ve had a bunch of work done.
Go-to Snack: Nuts. I also eat them for breakfast.
Hair: I struggle with hair loss so I use the Rene Furterer line of supplements and serums for thinning hair. I massage the Complexe 5 into my scalp before shampooing to stimulate hair growth. It really, really works!
On Cellulite: I trained with a Venezuelan in New York City who taught me that carbonated water and dairy both cause cellulite. I don’t do either.
Off-Duty Workout: Ballet. It’s wonderful for your body because it keeps you balanced and uses your own body weight. (Dembo practices at home using BalletBeautiful.com, the same trainers who prepared Natalie Portman for her role in Black Swan.)
Secret Weapon: YokPollar 5 in 1 phototherapy machine with LED light (available at Amazon.com). It tightens and tones skin, but you have to be very disciplined and do it daily to see results.
Those Lashes: Lancôme Ôscillation Powerbooster, Chanel Le Volume De Chanel Mascara, RapidLash.
