Fall beauty can be so predictable, but this year I’m happy to report a few intriguing newcomers to the scene. From aromatic cocktails to brow bars, here are some of my new faves.
I’m all for big box when it comes to stocking up on beauty basics. But for more bespoke finds, head to Parc, where proprietress Thao Nguyen, known for her urban-bohemian fashion eye, has curated an apothecary-style mix of indie beauty you won’t find anywhere else: Tatine candles, Herbivore Botanicals and Soul Sunday skincare, and MCMC Fragrances, to name a few. 320 Hennepin Ave. E., Mpls., 612-353-4966; 5023 France Ave. S., Edina, 952-405-2505, parcboutique.com
Move over bitters, aromatic oils may be having a moment. The founders of Prohibition Kombucha and Verdant Tea have teamed up with Intelligent Nutrients to open IN Spirits by Prohibition at the organic beauty brand’s flagship salon and retail space in Northeast Minneapolis. They’ll be thoughtfully blending fragrant concoctions like Attune #3, a peppermint, rose, geranium, and vetiver-laced negroni. The bar opens at 4 pm; schedule your bang trim accordingly. 983 Hennepin Ave. E., Mpls., 612-617-2011, horstandfriends.com
Before you invest in yet another firming cream that promises everything and does absolutely nothing, consider a microcurrent facial. Done professionally using painless, electrically charged wands that stimulate collagen and elastin growth, a series of treatments will sculpt the jawline, firm and tone skin, and smooth fine lines. At-home devices such as the NuFACE mini do the same thing over time with daily use. Think of it as a five-minute facelift. Facial sculpting, $95 at Thomas Charles Salon, 4008 Minnetonka Blvd., St. Louis Park, 952-925-4277, thomascharlessalon.com; NuFACE mini, $199, mynuface.com
They sound too good to be true, but according to the hair-challenged and stylists alike, Aveda’s newest plant-powered styling aids really do work. I should probably own stock in the Thickening Tonic ($28), a wheat protein and herb-based plumper that bonds to strands and expands them from root to tip. Then there’s Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight ($26), a daily alternative to chemical relaxers. Applied before five consecutive blowouts, it will keep curly hair straight for up to three washes. aveda.com
Brow Bars E’rywhere
Blowout bars have been big for a while now—several have already come and gone—but it’s the abundance of brow bars cropping up that have me raising an eyebrow. It makes sense: A full arch will always be in and, unless you want to risk over-tweezing like some of us did in college (ahem), your brows are best left to the professionals.
