J. Crew Mercantile opens Wednesday, June 1, at Shoppes at Knollwood in St. Louis Park, and the big question eager shoppers are asking: how is this new value-oriented J.Crew store different from the J.Crew Factory store at Twin Cities Premium Outlets in Eagan?
The answer: it isn't.
Mercantile is the struggling J.Crew’s attempt to take outlet pricing beyond outlet centers. Mercantile sells Factory merchandise—mostly designed specifically for the outlet stores. The only difference is the locations, at major shopping malls and centrally located lifestyle centers—often near other upscale outlets like Nordstrom Rack and DSW, which will be its neighbors at Knollwood.
Based on the two-dozen Mercantile stores J.Crew has opened throughout the country in the past year, expect an experience virtually identical to J.Crew Factory in terms of merchandise, prices, and store design. This may disappoint some, and delight others. Like most things J.Crew.
J.Crew will celebrate its Knollwood opening Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. with refreshments. A percentage of sales during that time will be donated to Animal Ark.
