West Elm is proof positive that a national retailer can capture local flavor. The home retailer began experimenting with independent makers back in 2013, and the LOCAL program now involves more than 500 artists in its stores nationwide. Following many successful pop up events with Minnesota makers, West Elm's Edina store now features a permanent weLOCAL department. The initial collection includes Cindy Lindgren's cards and prints, Fringe & Fettle ceramics, Marvin Freitas furniture, and 10 others. What's nice for the artists is West Elm purchases their product directly—not on spec. West Elm is partnering with Twin Cities branding pro Jerrod Sumner to scout local makers. He's already on the lookout for a holiday collection.
