Add wallpaper designer to Eric Dayton's ever expanding repertoire of lifestyle projects informed by his northern roots. Dayton’s Askov Finlayson men’s store partnered with Hygge & West on a collection of wallpapers themed around a Minnesota winter, with patterns that conjure snow and kindling.
The hero print (pictured above) features an ebony background with shimmering silver specks—designed to capture Dayton’s memory of driving home from hockey practice with his dad, Gov. Mark Dayton, in a blizzard—the flakes reflected in the headlights. The snow pattern also comes in a white background with gray, gold or blue. You’ll find it on the walls of the Askov Finlayson restroom, near the fitting rooms, which have been adorned in the light cream version of the wood pattern.
Collaborations are a big part of Hygge’s business, but generally the modern wallpaper company partners with people (author Justina Blakeney) or brands (Rifle Paper Co.), not retailers. “We’re avid shoppers," says Aimee Lagos, the Minneapolis-based half of Hygge & West. “We were thinking about how we could collaborate with some favorite shops.” First was Eden & Eden of San Francisco, where Lagos’ business partner Christiana Coop is based. And when it came time to pick a Twin Cities store, Lagos reached out to one of her favorite destinations in the North Loop. Dayton was already a fan of the brand—Hygge & West wallpaper is featured in one of the private dining rooms above the Bachelor Farmer restaurant.
“A lot of wallpapers skew more feminine—flowers, birds,” Dayton says. “So it was cool to bring a more masculine aesthetic.”
