This is me, three days after my blowout at Gust-o, the latest blow dry bar to open in Minneapolis. I consider it a striking success, if I do say so myself, considering I worked out once, and slept on it a couple of times, too. Honestly, I have not had a bad blowout in my tour of Twin Cities blow dry bars (see our comprehensive Blow Dry Bar Guide). I frequently get asked which is my favorite, and I think it largely comes down to what location is most convenient, and the talent and experience of the stylist you get. My Gust-o experience didn't particularly stand out from the rest, but it was equally satisfying. Service was polished—they took my coat, brought me a drink, and included a scalp massage during the shampoo. The Gust-o blowout left my hair the waviest of them all—most stylists seem inclined to try to straighten out my thick, naturally wavy hair and give it a flip at the end. I'm still enjoying the loose waves and wishing I could achieve them at home.
Of course each blow dry bar is trying to distinguish itself in what's becoming a crowded field. Gust-o has created a vibrant setting with orange and pink walls, murals and ornate mirrors to set the tone. It's run by Kacey Pohlad and Betsy Hawn, two marketing/retail pros with an appreciation for fabulous hair. (Hawn lives in Minneapolis; Pohlad is in Boston, where a second Gust-o is in the works.) Service, as I said, is polished, and products are top-notch: Oribe and Living Proof. In addition to $35 blowouts, the menu includes up-dos and makeup application. Hours are somewhat limited to start: Wednesday-Sunday; schedule varies by day. 3054 Excelsior Blvd., Mpls., 612-285-8705
