Finally took my own advice and went to Nani Nalu at 50th & France for a new swimsuit. Talk about money well spent—I can’t think of a more pleasant and efficient shopping experience, and I could name several dozen errands I’d run, rather than wriggling in and out of bikini tops. Just the thought of trying on suit after suit (in sizes that could drive me to a juice diet once and for all), and facing that fitting room mirror is exhausting, which is why I decided to spare myself the department store drama, and go straight to the specialists. At Nani Nalu, they had three questions for me: Bra size, pant size, and preference: sporty or sexy. Let’s see . . . both? Or either, really—so long as all my parts stay where they’re supposed to. I stepped into a fitting room filled with suits—just enough options, without seeming overwhelming. Everything I tried on fit! And from my reaction—this one too high cut, that one too pinup for a family vacation—owner Jennifer Cermak quickly honed in on exactly what I needed. She’s heard every complaint, witnessed every body issue, and has figured out the answers to all of our swimwear woes. Her bikini tops are multi-taskers. Whatever you need—support, boost, minimizing—she's got one for the job. Her tankinis are longer than average for a more flattering silhouette. Feeling a little vulnerable in a low cut bottom? Voila: the perfect sarong. I left with a three piece set, and a sarong. True, it’s the most I’ve ever spent on a swimsuit, but it’s also the best I’ve ever felt in one. This is what boutique shopping should be: personal, helpful, smart, and uplifting—in more ways than one. Nani Nalu will be closed Sunday, April 1 to move to its new, larger storefront down the street. The store will reopen Monday, at 3821 W. 50th St. (the old Peterson Portraits space). I got a sneak peek last week, and the airy design with modern island touches feels like a mini escape. There are eight cabana-style fitting rooms (no more hour-long waits!), a parking lot in back, and an even broader range of options—including Cermak's new JennaSea line for plus sizes.
