Past Woodbury Lakes—the hollow outdoor mall with a handful of chain stores and gaping spaces that point to plans unfulfilled—past several more smallish strip centers and townhouses and a couple of housing developments and a fair number of grassy fields—that’s where you hang a left. Then you pass the CVS, the Walgreens, and a couple of local restaurants, and turn into the smaller strip center lot with less street visibility. And there, in the Eagle Valley Marketplace—that’s where you’ll find the new Sisu boutique.
If you have to ask for directions, you’re not the target for this new women’s contemporary store, stocked with Henry & Belle jeans, Bella Dahl soft blouses, chunky sweaters, booties, and jewelry, mostly priced under $100. Owner Heidi Martin is playing to the fashion starved women of Woodbury—the regulars at Angelina’s Kitchen, the moms who live in Stonemill Farms. She made a conscious decision to bring her boutique to them, rather than take one of several vacant spots at Woodbury Lakes, where she believes people go with a chain store mindset. (The one exception, independent fashion boutique Elodie, closed there last year.)
“I think women want a destination boutique,” says Martin, who previously worked at Hot Mama in Woodbury. She points to Mainstream Boutique, another off the beaten path women’s store that does well in Woodbury.
Sisu is a Finnish term. Loosely translated, it means determination and perseverance, which is exactly what any retailer needs, especially in Woodbury. Martin, the daughter of career retailers, seems prepared. She believes that with good service, and a constantly updated stock of on-trend, affordable apparel, she can succeed amid the big box stores. In a bedroom community like Woodbury, there are a lot of walk-in closets crying to be filled.
Check out Sisu this Saturday, Jan. 11 for a grand opening celebration with prizes, refreshments, a trunk show and more. 2170F Eagle Creek Lane, Woodbury, 651-436-2076, shopwithsisu.com
