Smile Network International's Minneapolis store
When you’re traveling through markets and meeting artisans in far flung places like West Africa and Vietnam, it’s hard to resist grabbing a hand crafted souvenir or 10: leather bags, colorful pottery, cozy chic scarves. Smile Network International has dabbled in retail for years—the Minneapolis-based non-profit, which provides reconstructive surgeries for children born with cleft lips and palates in developing countries, brings back artisan made goods from many of the regions its serves, and sells them to help fund the cause. Two handbags could pay for a child’s surgery.
Smile Network had a shop within its offices in the North Loop—before North Loop rent forced the non-profit to move. The organization has done pop-ups and sold goods at its fundraisers through the years, but now, Smile Network finally has a store worthy of its merchandise and mission.
Inspire: global gifts for urban adventures is now open in the lobby of Smile Network’s new offices near Loring Park. With glass walls and high ceilings, the modern space is a perfect back drop for sleek white blouses made in Africa and hand beaded throws by Zulu tribal women. The purpose will compel you, and the products will keep you coming back to this great new resource where the shopping truly makes you feel good.108 W. 14th St., Mpls.
