Make that, Shop in the Suburbs. After more than a dozen years at 48th and Chicago in Minneapolis, independent gift store Shop in the City is moving to 50th & France in Edina. It’s not the first time the store has dabbled in real estate west of 35W—for six years, Shop in the City ran a second location at 50th and Xerxes. But in the past year, owner Jake Sanders has had the itch to shake things up. With his lease set to expire at 48th & Chicago, Sanders began to look around, and found the former J. Novachis space at 50th & France available for rent.
The move is definitely going to be a big change for Shop in the City, which has had the gift market cornered at 48th & Chicago. Traffic will no doubt be considerably higher in downtown Edina, but there, Shop in the City will be one of many stores selling stationery, jewelry, toys, home accessories and some women’s apparel.
“I try to view it from the lens of the shopper: you want to go to an area where you have choices,” Sanders says. “I feel like we’re going to add another choice for customers.”
But with his new neighbors (and smaller store size) in mind, the product selection will likely change some. “I’m always retooling,” Sanders says.
Shop in the City will make the move in July or August. A moving sale started this week, with 30 percent off accessories and 20 percent of children’s items.
Storefronts tend not to stay vacant at 50th & France for long, and another is about to become available. La Bratique is calling it quits after eight years of selling bras and lingerie—especially in hard-to-find sizes. As of this week, all merchandise is 25 to 50 percent off. That includes bras, panties, shapewear and hosiery from Chantelle, Wacoal, Spanx, Natori, Prima Donna, and many more. Sizes range from 28A to 42K. All sales are final.
