It’s finally starting to feel like summer as we head into Fourth of July weekend, which is exactly when retailers are over it. And that means it might be worth slipping away from the picnic or pool to shop. Best bet this weekend: summer apparel. Current season clothing is on sale everywhere from chains to boutiques—none of this 20 percent stuff; expect 40 percent off or better.
July is also a good time to get a deal on patio furniture. Yes, you might save even more at the end of the season, but you have to weigh out how much enjoyment you’ll get from buying now, while there's still plenty of sunny days ahead.
Other good buys over the Fourth of July, according to DealNews.com:
Video Games are likely to be on sale. Probably because: who wants to spend Fourth of July playing video games???
Laptop computers. As retailers get ready to introduce new back to school models, you might get a break on one that’s been on the shelves a while.
Travel. If you are thinking about an end-of-summer getaway, now is the time to plan it, and save.
What Not to buy in July:
Grills. They don’t get marked down with the patio furniture. So if you’re in need of a place to cook those hot dogs, expect to pay full price.
Large appliances. We tend to think of these holiday weekends as the right time to buy a new washer/dryer or similar sexy purchases, but unlike Memorial Day, Independence Day doesn’t bring the deals. You’re better off waiting until November, when the Black Friday discounts roll out.
TVs. Same deal—hold off until closer to the holidays.
So if you're inspried to shop this weekend, here are a few sales to check out around the Twin Cities:
Albertville Premium Outlets – Big discounts at many stores all weekend long
Traditions Classic Home Furnishings: Floor Model Sale, up to 65 percent off. Through July 31. 4245 Excelsior Blvd., Mpls. and 1039 Grand Ave., St. Paul
Max’s Semi Annual Sale: 40 to 80 percent off select jewelry, home accessories and gourmet chocolates. Through July 19. Excelsior & Grand, St. Louis Park
Stephanie’s Progressive Sale: The more you buy, more you save up to 40 percent. Through July 31. 758 Cleveland Ave. S., St. Paul
And mark the calendar, because there are more great sales ahead throughout July:
Crazy Days in Excelsior and 50th & France starts July 17. A lot of independent retailers wait for this weekend to take their deepest markdowns.
Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. It starts July 18 (with early access July 10 for Nordstrom card holders). Remember, this one isn't about summer clearance; it's discounts on fall merchandise before it goes up to regular price. So if you can wrap your head around winter boots in the heart of flip flop season, you stand to save.
Check our sale calendar often for more good deals.
