Downtown Minneapolis won’t be without Saks Off 5th for long. Just days after closing at Gaviidae Common, the discount division of Saks Fifth Avenue has signed a lease at Minneapolis City Center. The new store is slated to open April, 2016.
Off 5th will be positioned as the anchor of the retail center at Sixth Street and Nicollet Mall. Off 5th will occupy the former Office Depot space as well as space above it for a total of 40,321 square feet.
When Hudson’s Bay Co. acquired Saks Inc. in 2013, the decision to close the downtown store was already made, a company spokesperson said.. “This city has been a strong market for us, and Minneapolis City Center provides us with a vibrant location in which to serve our shoppers looking for exceptional merchandise at great value,” says Jonathan Greller, HBC’s president of outlets.
Shorenstein Properties, which acquired Minneapolis City Center in 2012, hopes the announcement will keep the momentum going for the downtown shopping center. “We continue to see strong interest in the remaining ground-floor space from other national and regional stores,” Shorenstein Properties president Glenn Shannon says. “We believe that tenant interest will absolutely be enhanced as a result of this addition.”
Off 5th also has a store at Twin Cities Premium Outlets in Eagan.
