Given its high rent, considerable size and primo location in the heart of 50th & France, I expected the former Monique Lhuillier space to go to a larger retailer—perhaps an opportunity for another designer brand, new to the Twin Cities. But Sara Saferstein, a local woman with years of retail experience, snapped up the space for A La Mode, a new luxury nail spa and gift boutique, now open.
The long space has been modernized and looks light, airy, and downright huge without fitting rooms and racks of billowing wedding dresses. Manicures start at $25; pedicures at $40. Memberships are available, with discounts for frequent customers. A La Mode uses Deborah Lippmann nail polish (a celeb favorite not standard at most salons). Vinylux and Shellac polish application can be added for an extra charge. No acrylics—a la Mode prides itself on being chemical free. Other add-ons include foot therapy and hot stone massage. It’s an appealing menu, no doubt—the only question is whether the neighborhood, which is already home to several popular salons and spas, can support another, especially in such a large space. Selling a few of those Ted Baker handbags in the front of the shop ought to help: the product area is stocked with a smattering of upscale gifts and accessories including jewelry, candles, pillows, and pajamas. 3928 W. 50th St., Edina, 952-300-2642
