Crowdfunded fashion could be the demise of the clearance rack.
Mavenhaus Collective goes live today, Monday, January 5. It's a pretty little online boutique featuring exclusive fashion collaborations with a handful of cool designers, including Clare V., Dream Collective, Ariana Bohling, Dace, and String Theory. But what you see on the site are samples that will only go into production if enough people commit.
“We’re eliminating waste by guaranteeing that the designers are only making designs that are already spoken for,” says St. Paul-based public relations expert Tara Schlosser, who founded Mavenhaus with her sister, popular Bliss blogger Traci French, whose more than 4 million Pinterest followers have opened doors with fashion designers and brands. Since Pinterest became popular, Schlosser and French have made a business of coaching social media influencers. Mavenhaus is their next evolution.
Each month will bring new collaborations on Mavenhaus. For each of the eight items launching in January—including a Clare V. clutch, Ariana Bohling ankle boots and a silk dress by Dace—a minimum quantity is set, anywhere from 1 to 50, and when it is reached, the item will go into production. Customers will only be charged once the sale closes. Exclusivity demands delayed gratification: items will take four to eight weeks to ship.
Says Schlosser, “We believe that incredible design is worth the wait.”
