Finding the right shade for a vintage lamp can be tricky. So midcentury home furnishings store MidModMen + Friends has teamed up with another St. Paul business, Powerhouse Design, on a line of retro lampshades and light fixtures. The exclusive collection of “era-appropriate” shades and pendant lights will make its debut at MidModMen + Friends on Saturday (June 13).
Powerhouse founder Lex Winger designs, prints, and assembles lamp shades for vintage lamps he collects. He's been selling them on Etsy, and was looking for a local, bricks and mortar partner. He reached out to MidModMen owner Neal Kielar, who loved the idea of working together.
“Displaying a favorite lamp without an appropriate shade,” Kielar says, “is equivalent to a man in the early 1960s going out without a hat: it can be done, but it shouldn’t!”
Lamp shades will generally run $55 to $150; pendants, $70 to $175.
Winger will be at MidModMen for the launch of the Powerhouse Design Sampler on Saturday. Customers are encouraged to bring in lamps in need of a replacement shade—Winger and Kielar will help match them with replacement shades. 2401 University Ave., St. Paul
