Katie Cazorla, star of Nail Files on TV Guide Network, knows just the manicure for her maiden visit to the Minnesota State Fair: “I’m going to Viking people’s nails out! Legendary Lavender mixed with another purple and a neon yellow nail as an accent,” says the outspoken owner of the Painted Nail in Los Angeles, a favorite among celebs. Cazorla’s mobile spa rolls into town for the last day of the fair, when her team will offer free manis near the Horticulture building Monday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Or catch up with Cazorla and her mobile spa at Southdale next Tuesday, Sept. 4, from 1 to 6 p.m. It’s possible we could be seeing more of the no holds barred reality star around the Twin Cities. Keep this on the down low, but she’s meeting with Shop NBC while in town to talk about showcasing her growing collection of products including nail polish, 3D nails and gel. Before she hit the road in her mobile spa, Cazorla and I talked about the nail revolution she is currently riding—nail polish sales were up 59 percent last year and the trend continues in 2012. “Nail polish is outselling lipstick! We’re not just a little corner in the salon anymore," Cazorla says. "We’re up there with stylists being taken seriously! Nails are fancy." Nail art has overcome tacky. “The other day a woman in a pantsuit on her lunch break came into the Painted Nail. She had just found out she was pregnant, and got the sonogram printed on her nails!" Cazorla says. "There is no line anymore.” But some looks are better than others. Here are Cazorla’s latest tips on nail trends. The new shape: Squoval. Square nail; oval tip. “It’s very fashion forward.” Best follow up to the Olympic red, white and blue nails that swept the nation this summer: Layers of gold glitter. For a great fall statement, try jewel tones with shimmer. Don’t match your toes and fingers, nor your nails and outfits. “Too much matching is so obvious. Go for shades in the same family.” The wilder the nail art, the shorter the nails should be to avoid looking cheap. If you tend to be a pale pink polish sort of person, shake it up with one accent nail in a deeper color, like tangerine. The second season of Nail Files is now airing on TV Guide Network. In the Twin Cities, tune in Sundays, 8 p.m. on Comcast Channel 127.
