Martha Stewart’s former hairstylist Anthony Sorenson is going to have to share the “celebrity stylist” spotlight at Juut Salonspa. Straight from Rita Hazan Salon in New York—where Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson and Madonna are among the regulars—husband and wife duo Alex and Roz Safdari have joined the Juut team. Alex does color; Roz cuts, and while the two generally resist interfering with the other’s craft, they clearly share a vision that makes for an impactful one-two punch, as I was lucky enough to experience today.
Accustomed to the tresses of Fifth Avenue socialites, Arabian princesses, and Rachel Ray, the Safdaris are now getting acquainted with the Twin Cities. They were ready to trade the glamorous life for a house and backyard for their two little girls. Roz is a Minnesota native and graduate of the Aveda Institute. Like Sorenson, she and her husband also worked at the legendary Frederic Fekkai Salon.
The couple are on a mission to simplify—not only their lifestyle, but Minnesota’s hair. “I’ve noticed a lot of people just have a lot of different things going on,” Roz said. “Too much—simple can be so much better.”
Same goes for color. Alex is a fan of natural, blended color over stripes of highlights. He used balayage (painting rather than foils) to amp up my light brown with buttery blond highlights strategically blended to look natural while adding dimension and some lightness at the tips of my locks (which felt incredibly silky after he applied a gloss). He took the time to add an extra dose of color around my face, where gray hair can be resistant to dye. Ahem, not that I would know anything about that.
The Safdaris—you’re not obligated to see both, but many choose to—are now taking appointments at Juut in Edina and Uptown. The Uptown location, which is my favorite for its big windows and bustling atmosphere, was recently converted into a full salon and spa, and the training academy moved upstairs.
