When it comes to fashion, Jennie Garth is no Kelly Taylor. “I need a helper for sure,” she says of getting dressed for events—including a whirlwind media blitz to promote her new book, Deep Thoughts from a Hollywood Blonde. “I’m not a visionary when it comes to fashion. I’m more into home decorating.” (Much more on that to come on her HGTV show, The Jennie Garth Project, premiering in June).
So on the eve of her maiden visit to Mall of America, Garth doesn't have a long shopping list. “Shoes,” she says. “I like shoes.” She may not be as materially minded as her character on Beverly Hills 90210, but Garth does have refined taste, even in sneakers: “I like Golden Goose sneakers. They are absurdly expensive–it makes no sense.
Garth does most of her shopping online these days. “I don’t get out much,” says the mother of three, who is also in pre-production on an ABC Family series with her 90210 pal Tori Spelling. The two are executive producing and starring in Mystery Girls, which follows two former detective TV show starlets reunited by a real-life mystery. Garth plays a suburban housewife and mother; Spelling’s character still longs for her glory days in the 90s’ when she was on TV. “Tori’s character dresses very girly, very pink. Mine is more grounded and earthy,” Garth says. “But we’re both looking good. I’m so happy to be working with her again.”
Garth’s oldest daughter Luca (with ex Peter Facinelli) recently binge-watched the entire 10-year run of 90210. “I was reluctant—I didn’t want her to watch it until she was 15 or 16, but she loved it.” As for her new memoir, which talks about her days on TV, her divorce, and everything in between, “it’s not a book for my daughters at this point. For me, it was about artistic expression, and a chance to share part of myself with others.” And where does one go after writing a memoir at 41? “I feel like I’m starting a new book. That’s where I am in my life in general—starting over, starting better, getting ahead of the game.”
Meet Garth at Mall of America on Friday, March 7, at 7 p.m.
