The spring fashion feature in our March issue of Mpls.St.Paul Magazine is one of my all-time favorites. Stripes—stripes!—were our foundation, and we easily built a range of looks along that line (see what I did there?), from the short suit to the maxi skirt. Now, personally, my comfort zone is somewhere between the two, but this just might be my season to branch out. I know women even shorter and older than I am who can pull off both. I hope you'll check out the entire fashion section in the issue now on newsstands . . . and tell me what you're excited to wear—or at least inspired to try—for spring. Meanwhile, here's a peek at what went on during our spring photo shoot, on an arctic January day . . .
We were lucky to steal makeup artist Janell Geason from Aveda for the day—she's their global beauty director. The coming season is prompting her to break out the greens: eyeliner, eyeshadow, nail polish. (Off the glossy pages: chose one.)
Behold, the accessories table! We're loving gold bangles and a patterned shoe. See that pink/coral chain necklace? Looks very J.Crew, but it's actually from Fringe at 50th & France, where we found lots of affordable on-trend accessories.
That's our intrepid stylist/fashion editor Liz Doyle, modeling for the model.
Liz and I didn't set out to make it a blazer story . . . we just happened upon so many great ones. We narrowed it to three, though it wasn't easy, and went all editor-like, dubbing them "The New Blazer." In stripes and pattern, it's no longer a tailored basic.
We interrupt this model pose for a game of catch that clutch! When Liz threw it in—literally—our photographer Steve Henke happened to capture the moment, and it made for an unexpectedly cool shot. So, we played catch a while—our model was a very good sport (she jumps, too!). The airborne bag ultimately didn't make it into the magazine, but be sure to see what did!
