House of Talents' handmade, African baskets—featured at Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters and Crate & Barrel—now have a home in the North Loop. Since moving to Minnesota, Kate Herzog has made it her mission to create industry in her native Ghana. She works with artisans on commercially viable designs that they construct by hand in Ghana. Much of the inventory then goes to larger retailers, but you can shop the full array of options—from bicycle baskets and picnic baskets to decorative and sturdy storage baskets—at her bright new lofted studio in the North Loop of Minneapolis.
You have to work a bit to find it, on the sixth floor of the building behind Deja Vu. Jeromeo is in the same building, on the street level. Enter through the bookstore door, and walk straight through what looks like a gallery. There, you'll find the elevator to take upstairs. It's worth the effort to meet Kate and shop her goods, which include jewelry and soaps as well as baskets—all of which support artisans in African who didn't have health insurance, or even an inkling of attending college until they met Kate. 250 Third Ave. N., Ste. 615, Mpls.
