H&M announced today that it will open this fall at Calhoun Square. It's just the shot of fast fashion the Uptown shopping mall needs to reinstate itself as an apparel shopping destination. Uptown has become a magnet for contemporary home stores--Jonathan Adler, cb2 and Roam are the most recent arrivals. Meanwhile, Calhoun Square, at the corner of Lake and Hennepin, has been totally remodeled, with LA Fitness and new restaurants as traffic drivers. There are plenty of reasons to go to Calhoun Square, like Kitchen Window Cooking School and Comedy Sportz, but shopping for fashion hasn't been one of them. H&M, a global brand known for on-trend fashion at affordable prices, fills a void, and should help drive shoppers to smaller, independent clothing boutiques like Motto, new at the corner of 31st and Hennepin, and VState and Bay Street Shoes, which have held their ground, tucked inside Calhoun Square. H&M is planning a 23,000-square-foot store offering its full assortment of clothes and accessories for women, men, and kids, including maternity, lingerie, and sports apparel. H&M has 245 U.S. stores including Mall of America, Southdale Center, Maplewood Mall and Woodbury Lakes in the Twin Cities. Calhoun Square will be nearly the size of H&M's largest Twin Cities store at Mall of America. The Swedish retailer said it believes strongly in the Minnesota market.
