I was on the hunt for the perfect sundress to feature in the August issue of Mpls.St.Paul Magazine--something utilitarian enough that you could wear it to a picnic or baseball game and feel breezy and comfortable, yet put together. I found just the thing--a fitted cotton dress in light blue with wide white straps--at Il Vostro Boutique. Bonus: it was made by a local company, HighOver U out of Excelsior. Before I had a chance to investigate this brand (I tend to hear about Minnesota-made lines pretty quickly), I got the invite for a Designer Event this Thursday, 6 to 8 p.m., at Brightwater Clothing & Gear in Excelsior. Meet HighOver U designer and creator Heather Abrahamsen. Her new line is not only designed in Excelsior, but each piece is made individually, with USA fabrics. Still, from cut to construction, there's nothing that appears "local" about it on the rack, which is truly the highest compliment I could pay. Abrahamsen's goal is to add a feminine touch to the locally made movement--and right off the bat, she's succeeding. HighOver U is available at Allee Metro Chic in addition to Il Vostro and Brightwater.
