It’s down to the last couple of Diane von Furstenberg blouses and Theory dresses at Saks Off 5th in downtown Minneapolis, which will close for good on Saturday, January 17. In the continued slide of downtown retail from designer deals to drugstore, Walgreens will take over a chunk of the Off 5th space at Gaviiade Common on Nicollet Mall.
I went to pay my final respects to Saks Off 5th, which, while no crown jewel, at least offered downtown shoppers some designer brands no longer sold at Macy’s. What remains of the merchandise is packed into one side of the skyway level. For men, there are racks of dress shirts and suits. For women, it’s a hodgepodge: definitely some J Brand and other desirable denim, evening dresses, and lightweight tops that look leftover from summer and early fall. There’s still some jewelry, a sprinkling of women’s shoes and children’s apparel. Handbags are gone. All remaining merchandise is 70 percent off the marked price, so if you do dig out a gem, it’s a real bargain.
Saks Off 5th has a new store in Eagan, at Twin Cities Premium Outlets.
