Dave & Busters is set to begin construction on an arcade/restaurant/bar on the third floor of Southdale Center, the mall announced Thursday. The real news: Southdale has a third floor!
Even as the nation's first enclosed shopping mall remodeled and reinvigorated its center court, the third floor has remained a ghost town since the food court relocated. A decade ago, the third floor was packed with teen-friendly stores and lounge areas intended to be a gathering spot for young people . . . who now gather around smartphones to order their sneakers and jeans online. So an entertainment venue is the smart move for Southdale, and a trend nationwide as cavernous centers repurpose spaces retailers no longer can afford to fill.
The 40,000 square foot venue is expected to open next spring. Because it is a smaller floor plan, this Dave & Busters will not include a bowling alley. Dave & Busters convinced the city of Edina to change an ordinance to allow drinks to be served in a place that includes arcade games. Dave & Busters also has a location in Maple Grove.
