Q: Why is mindfulness important?
A: Mindfulness is about being present, “living with your eyes open” and “showing up” for each moment of life. Mindfulness can be difficult because it is the opposite of avoiding and involves focusing attention and acknowledging reality without judgments. For most people, mindfulness takes practice. Many people find that mindfulness helps to reduce suffering and increase happiness.
Q: What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy?
A: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based comprehensive Cognitive- Behavioral Therapy (CBT) developed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D., A.B.P.P. DBT is used to treat individuals diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder or Borderline Personality traits, substance use disorders, depression, trauma related issues, and eating disorders. The goal of DBT is to create and live “a life worth living.” DBT includes individual psychotherapy and skills group. Clients learn and practice Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Interpersonal Effectiveness and Emotion Regulation skills. Coaching calls are a unique component of DBT and provide the client with opportunities to talk to their individual therapist about skills outside of sessions.

Q: What is Exposure Based Therapy and when is it used?
A: Exposure therapies are a form of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and are used to confront fears in a systematic way with the goal of decreasing overall fearful reactions, distress and anxiety. Prolonged Exposure (PE) is used to treat Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and problems related to trauma. Exposure and Response (Ritual) Prevention (EX/RP) is used to treat Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Exposure therapies are also used to treat Social Anxiety, Panic Disorder, Agoraphobia, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Specifi c Phobias.
