Since moving to Minnesota, Kate Herzog has made it her mission to create industry in her native Ghana. She works with artisans on designs they construct and dye by hand in Ghana. You have to work a bit to find her lofted studio. Enter through the bookstore door, and walk straight through what looks like a gallery. There, you'll find the elevator to take upstairs. It's worth the effort to meet Kate and shop her goods, which include jewelry, drums, textiles, soaps, and baskets—all of which support artisans in African who didn't have health insurance, or even an inkling of attending college until they met Kate.
