Holy free comic books, batman!
This year, Free Comic Book Day falls on the same weekend as the first ever Minneapolis ComicCon: Saturday, May 3. On that day if you're not at the Minneapolis Convention Center dressed as Princess Leia with your children following behind you dressed as ewoks, you’ll be able to pick out a free comic book to take home from many Twin Cities comic book shops. Free!
We’re alerting you to our thought bubble about this early so you can get a fix in during spring break, too.
Here’s our picks for where young readers can disappear for hours, written by comic book guy and college student Steven Carver.
Captain Jack’s Comics in Bloomington
A family-friendly staff greets you immediately as you walk in. The store is easy to navigate with a section dedicated to all-ages comics right in the front of the store. For Free Comic Book Day, Captain Jack’s will offer the usual gamut of superhero comics, but owner Bjorn Brosdahl has a definite interest in getting kids to read age-appropriate comics, such as Herobear & the Kid. “Comic books spark the imaginations of kids, hooking them for the rest of their life,” he says. 8730 Lyndale Ave S Bloomington, MN 55420, 952-583-8538
Uncle Sven’s Comic Shoppe in St. Paul
Uncle Sven’s is about half the size of Captain Jack’s, and with only one staff member, but that doesn’t make Shawn Helmueller any less friendly. This store too has an all-ages section (left wall, bottom rack), plus a candy rack and a fridge filled with soda. It’s an excellent place to spend Free Comic Book Day because of its intimate atmosphere and the passion Helmueller has for the medium. “Kids come here often, and they usually find what they want quickly, even if it’s not on the bottom shelf.” Helmueller suggests a classic collection named Bone, about little bone characters as they discover the land of humans. But if that’s not your bag. “There are plenty of comics in here that are great entry points for new readers,” he says. 1838 Saint Clair Ave Saint Paul, MN 55105, 651-699-3409
