Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. – 10 p.m.; Sunday 11 a.m. – 9 p.m.
Take a skate on the lighted outdoor rink, and then walk across the street to check out the humongous LED-lit tree in Rice Park. Skating is free, and skate rental is $4 or free for the immediate family members of everyone holding a Wells Fargo checking or credit card.
Rock the Red Kettle @ Mall of America
Friday 2 – 4 p.m.
In the giving spirit of the season, Minnesota Twins volunteers will work eight donation kettles around Mall of America to benefit Salvation Army Harbor Lights, the metro’s largest homeless shelter. Drop that loose change like it’s hot.
Early Bird Shopping @ Creative Kidstuff
Saturday 7 – 9 a.m.
The early bird gets a 20 percent discount on everything, and free wrapping. It’s free, but you have to call the store of your choice to reserve your spot.
Family Cross Country Ski Day @ Hyland Lake Park Reserve
Saturday 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Three Rivers instructors will lead family ski activities, and the hot chocolate will be flowing. Free admission and ski rental for kids 11 years and younger; $8 admission for kids and adults 12 years and older.
The Christmas Wish Book Signing @ Three Rooms
Saturday 1 – 3 p.m.
In the 50th and France neighborhood, Author Lori Evert, photographer Per Briehagen, and their daughter and the story’s protagonist, Anja, will be on hand to personalize your copy of their book, The Christmas Wish. Free.
Family Day: Ready-to-Wear @ Minneapolis Institute of Arts
Sunday 11 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Kids can fashion their own hats, create a mixed media masterpiece from buttons, cloth, and zippers, see how textile printing happens, see henna and beading demonstrations, and more. It’s free.

Even though they’ve been preparing for Christmas since 2008, the characters in Macy’s “A Day in the Life of an Elf” animated holiday display never fail to delight the under-eight set. Check the event page for hours. Free.
